I just came across this news story July 2, 2010, and felt that it should be preserved on our website.  On May 25th 2010 Past Chief, Past President and Commissioner Felix Coniglio suffered a heart attack during a meeting at the Brighton Fire Hall.  Asst. Chief Todd Bieron, with the assistance of other Town firefighters acted quickly, and were able to resuscitate Felix using an AED.  Coincidentally, Felix purchased the first AED for the Kenmore Fire Department years prior as Chief of the Department.

A Breath of Fresh Air for Pets

Special masks help rescued animals that need oxygen

By Anne Neville, Buffalo News Staff Reporter

Published: March 12, 2012, 11:50 PM

Animals pulled from burning houses in Tonawanda and Kenmore now have a better chance at survival, thanks to Project Breathe.

First responders from seven fire departments and one paramedic agency gathered Monday morning to accept donations of kits containing masks designed to save animals suffering from smoke inhalation.

“We have all been at fires where an animal needed oxygen or first aid,” said Felix Coniglio, past chief and current commissioner and day captain at the Village of Kenmore Fire Department. “Losing a pet in a fire is just like losing a loved one.” For more of this story CLICK HERE.

Kenmore gets fire hall upgrade grant

By Michael Regan The Tonawanda News

The Kenmore Volunteer Fire Department hall will soon have a much-needed upgrade that will help firefighters breathe easier, literally.

Firefighters there have been contending with an inadequate ventilation system for decades. But that will soon change following a $68,305 federal grant to be used for a new system to alleviate exhaust from emergency vehicles.

The money was allocated through the Federal Emergency Management Administration’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant. The funding will allow the department to purchase a station-based 100 percent direct source capture exhaust ventilation system for their fire trucks, which would filter harmful emissions out of the station.

In October, U.S. senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer wrote to FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate urging his support for these resources after fire Chief Brendan Kiefer contacted them to request assistance. The department had applied for the grant three times over the last several years to no avail. For more of this story CLICK HERE.
